Students learn about how a person’s country of origin may have an impact on their access to US citizenship.

<p dir="ltr">Nearly a quarter of New York residents are immigrants. Of those who are native-born citizens, almost one-fifth have at least one immigrant parent. How does country of origin impact who gets to be a US citizen? What does it mean to be a citizen in NYC? Does citizenship impact how we engage with our community?</p>
<p dir="ltr">In the fall of 2022, Teaching Artist Shifa Quraeshi collaborated with students from the International Community High School in the Bronx to take a closer look at identity and access to citizenship. </p>
<p dir="ltr">To investigate the issue, students talked to community members in the Bronx, interviewed stakeholders working on the subject, and created mixed media collages to process the information. Finally, the team gathered what they learned and created this booklet to teach others about who makes decisions about immigration, what factors impact who gets access to US citizenship, and how people can have a voice in these decisions.</p>
