Students investigate if and why there is an increase in violence in the NYC subway system.

In the spring of 2024, Teaching Artist Hugo Rojas collaborated with The Academy of Urban Planning and Engineering (AUPE) students to examine the reported increase in violence in subway systems, the strategies being implemented to reduce this violence, and how socioeconomic factors contribute to this increase in violence. To understand the issue, students talked to community members in their neighborhood, interviewed stakeholders working on the issue, and explored drawing and photography.
 
They gathered what they learned and created this booklet to teach others about different forms of violence people are experiencing in the subways, how it’s impacting communities across New York, and how we can build strategies to reduce these forms of violence.
