Students investigate how flooded streets and subways impact New Yorkers.

Students

Between July 2021 and September 2021, three major storms dumped millions of gallons of rain in New York City. Streets and subways flooded. Homes and businesses lost power. People were stranded far from their homes and families. And some people even lost their lives. What causes NYC’s streets and subway stations to flood? How does this impact New Yorkers? What can be done about it?
In the winter and spring of 2022, CUP and Teaching Artist Chaparro collaborated with students from the High School for Climate Justice to investigate these issues. The group experimented with printmaking, photography, and graphic design. They learned how to make their own books, and researched the subject by talking to stakeholders working on the issue. 
The team gathered what they learned and created this booklet to teach others about how to prepare for future floods and what steps we can take to build a more climate resilient world!
