The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene reported a 12% increase in overdoses across the city from 2021 to 2022, and Bronxites – particularly in the neighborhoods of Crotona, Tremont, Hunts Point, Mott Haven, and Highbridge – had the highest overdose death rate in 2022. 
In the fall of 2024, CUP Teaching Artist Syd Abady collaborated with International Community High School (ICHS) students to explore the impact of substance use on communities in the Bronx and to find out what support systems are available to them. 
To understand the issue, students talked to South Bronx community members, interviewed stakeholders working on the issue, and explored photography and drawing. 
They gathered what they learned to create a booklet about how substance use impacts Bronx communities and what resources are available to support them.
