Students investigate how systemic inequalities shape educational and employment opportunities available to Bronx youth.

Across New York City’s boroughs, the Bronx is reported to have the highest number of 16 to 24 year olds who are not at work and not enrolled in school, according to <a href="https://equity.nyc.gov/domains/education/out-of-school-and-out-of-work-youth">Equity NYC</a>. The Bronx also has the lowest college completion rates in NYC due to many factors, including persistent poverty, lack of resources, and limited access to college-related support. 
In the summer of 2025, CUP Teaching Artist Violet Overn and students at Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High Schools teamed up to investigate how systemic inequalities shape educational and employment opportunities available to Bronx youth, and what opportunities and resources there are for young people in the Bronx. To explore this question, students talked to community members, interviewed stakeholders working on the issue, and learned filmmaking techniques, including stop motion animation. 
They gathered what they learned to create a short film that explores what resources exist for young people in the Bronx, how students can bring attention to resource gaps in their schools, and how schools, governments, and employers can better support youth in the Bronx.
