A public curriculum that explores how the city could respond to hate crimes in ways that address the causes of violence.

Students

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues, gun violence and hate crimes in New York City continue to increase, disproportionately impacting poor and working-class Black, brown, and Asian communities. The mayor’s office has responded by increasing police budgets, while continuing to systematically underfund social services and community programs. 
Developed in May 2022 for a three-day workshop at Forsyth Satellite Academy, this curriculum is for adaption by educators and anyone interested in using art education to explore these questions:
How do community members think about and experience policing? How do they feel about the call to defund the police? How could the city respond to hate crimes in ways that actually address the root causes of violence?

"Asa and CUP were instrumental in allowing our class to dig deeper into themes around violence, inequality and police reform by helping us create community-informed perspectives on proposing new budget ideas for the city. Through surveying the neighborhood and photographing sites in the community, students were able to articulate clearer visions for a society based on care and not on furthering inequities."
