In recent years, homelessness in New York City has reached the highest levels since the Great Depression of the 1930s. In December 2022, there were 68,884 homeless people, including 21,805 homeless children, sleeping each night in New York City’s main municipal shelter system. 
Families entering shelters mostly come from a few clustered zip codes in the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. Black and Hispanic/Latinx New Yorkers are disproportionately affected by homelessness. In the Bronx, specifically the South Bronx, one in three Bronx residents live below the poverty level.
What are the reasons for the increase in homelessness in the Bronx? What opportunities are offered to people experiencing homelessness? Who makes decisions about homelessness issues in NYC, and how does it impact New Yorkers? 
In the spring of 2023, teaching artist Hugo Rojas collaborated with students from the Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice to investigate these questions. The students explored the subject through surveying local community members and interviewing stakeholders and experts on the subject. They created art including stop-motion animations and used filmmaking to process the information they learned.
The team gathered what they learned to create a documentary about homelessness and why people experience it in the Bronx.
