Supporting immigrant and/or transgender, gender non-conforming, or non-binary New Yorkers to enroll in health insurance.

The project team discusses final edits to the project.

There are about 400,000 New Yorkers who are both undocumented and uninsured. This means they aren’t currently covered for preventative services that are needed to live a healthy life. For people who are seriously ill, this means they’re unable to get life-saving care. What many people don’t know is that you can get free health insurance in New York State even if you’re undocumented.

For people who are undocumented and don’t speak fluent English, are transgender, gender non-conforming, or non-binary, or are living with HIV/AIDS, the process of applying for insurance can be complicated and overwhelming.

That’s why New York Lawyers for Public Interest (NYLPI) collaborated with CUP and designer, Graydon Manzke, to create Healthcare Is For You!

The guide includes information about:

  • how to know if you qualify for free health insurance and what it covers

  • how to apply for health insurance and get support doing it

  • the rights you have when applying for health insurance

  • the rights you have and the services you can use if you’re transgender, gender non-conforming, or non-binary

  • the services you can use if you’re living with HIV/AIDS

  • other resources immigrant New Yorkers can access even if they don’t qualify for free health insurance

NYLPI distributes the guide to their clients during intake and trainings they offer, and to organizations across the city and state that offer similar support.
