Students explore the concept of happiness

Throughout history, governments have attempted to create guidelines to evaluate the well-being of their citizens and the communities they serve. The United Nations has established a "Happiness Index," which uses several metrics to compare and rate countries. New York City's report merges data to create a citywide, community-based indicator of well-being.
Although numbers and statistics can provide some insight, they cannot fully capture the well-being of individuals and their neighborhoods. What is happiness? What factors contribute to a happy community? And what policies could be implemented to increase happiness for the people in the Bronx?
During the summer of 2023, a teaching artist, Gabe Gordon, collaborated with Fannie Lou Hamer High School students to explore the concept of happiness. Together, they examined the topic from a personal and community perspective, conducting surveys with residents and interviewing experts and stakeholders in the field. The students created art, including puppets, and utilized filmmaking techniques to process the information they gathered.
The team gathered what they learned to create a short documentary about happiness and how people experience it in the Bronx.
