Green spaces are defined as areas of vegetation, including parks, gardens, and natural landscapes, typically located within urban or suburban settings; are designed for social uses, environmental benefits, and aesthetic enjoyment; and are generally open to the public but can be privately opened.How can green spaces support immigrant and refugee communities? How can green spaces contribute to immigrants’ and refugees’ well-being and mental health?
In the winter and spring of 2024, CUP and Teaching Artist Marquisha Lu collaborated with students from the High School for Climate Justice (HSCJ) to investigate these questions. Students got out of the classroom to speak to community members, interview stakeholders working on the issue. They used analog film photography and collage to analyze what they learned. The team gathered what they learned and created this booklet to share with others about the importance of accessible green spaces.
