A recent <a href="https://www.nyc.gov/assets/doh/downloads/pdf/mh/social-media-mental-health-report-2024.pdf">Special Report on Social Media and Mental Health</a>, released by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) in June 2024, identified body image distortion and self-esteem damage as two consequences of social media use for New York City teens.
In the fall of 2024, CUP Teaching Artist Carly Terreson collaborated with The Academy of Urban Planning and Engineering (AUPE) students to explore the media's impact on body image perceptions and self-esteem of high school students in New York City. 
To understand the issue, students talked to community members in their neighborhood of Bushwick, interviewed stakeholders working on the issue, and explored photography and collage. 
They gathered what they learned to create a booklet about how media can shape body image and self-esteem.
