Students investigate the influx of immigrants to New York City, and how it is affecting the city.

According to a statement released by the mayor’s office in December 2024, over 220,000 migrants have arrived in NYC since 2022. Government officials have struggled to respond as people from all over the world have arrived, sometimes by the thousands each week. 
In the summer of 2024, CUP Teaching Artist Elliott Golden collaborated with Red Hook Community Justice Center students to better understand the recent influx of immigrants to New York City, local government response, and the role of the media in shaping narratives around migrant communities. 
The team gathered what they learned and worked with Teaching Artist Mandy Giampaolo to create a short documentary that examines why this is happening and if it is at all different from prior flows of immigration to the city.
