Apply to Making Policy Public!

Making Policy Public is CUP’s series of foldout posters that use graphic design to break down and demystify complex policy and social justice issues. Each project is the product of a collaboration between a designer, an advocacy organization, and CUP staff.

Four project teams are selected each year for an eight- to ten-month collaborative design process. CUP provides project management, art direction, writing, and editing; covers production costs; and additional support as needed.

Advocates receive 1,000 free copies of the foldout poster to distribute directly to their constituents and networks. Designers receive a $7,000 honorarium.

CUP is looking for community and advocacy organizations who are working to address policy issues that need visual explanation, and where the difficulty of understanding of this issue is leading to social injustice. We want groups who work directly with communities impacted by the issues and who can distribute the completed Making Policy Public project directly to that audience. Applicants should be interested in engaging in a collaborative design process and, most of all, interested in explaining an aspect of public policy!

We’re looking for highly skilled graphic designers, illustrators, and infographic designers with an interest in bringing unique visual solutions to the design challenges presented by complex policy issues. We want designers with strengths and experience in information organization, typography, and using different visuals including (but not limited to!) illustration or photography. Applicants should be interested in engaging in a collaborative and iterative design process!
